Kutahya PDF Print E-mail

Kutahya City is one of the oldest Turkish cities, with Turkish traditions still being practiced today and important Ottoman architectural monuments, including a castle, mosques, medreses, baths, complexes, mausoleums, and mansions. One of the finest mosques is the 14th century Ulu Mosque. Kutahya Castle offers a wonderful, panoramic view of the old town on the western side of the city. The Kutahya Archaeology Museum was a medrese in the 14th century; it now displays ethnographia, Roman and Byzantine relics, and tiles of Iznik and Kutahya from Ottoman times. Kutahya is a small province in the midst of hill country, clustering about the walls of an impressive hilltop fortress. It is the hometown of the world famous Yagolbedir Carpets, and Kutahya tiles which are seen everywhere in the country. The old wood and stucco houses of Kutahya are picturesque. The Hungarian House (Kossouth Museum) and those on the Germian Street are the most interesting ones.Kütahya is a thermal springs center with Harlek-lilca, Muratdagi-Gediz and Eynal-Simav, among the most famous.Cavdarhisar (Aizanoi) has one of the best preserved Roman temples in Anatolia; the Temple of Jupiter.

AIZANOI RUINS & HISTORY

Zeus Temple

Among the classical era buildings in Anatolia, the Aizanoi Zeus Temple is a rare example that preserved its original form. The Zeus Temple is a double temple dedicated to both Zeus and Kybele as indicated by its vaulted bottom structure. The pseudodipterous shaped temple of marble has 15 columns to its length and eight columns to its width. It was built during period of the Roman Empire, during the reign of "Emperor Hadrian".

Agora, Hereon and Dor Agora

Agora consists of the courtyard with columns right in front of the Zeus Temple and with the Hereon inside. It is presumed that the Hereon, which is on a podium covered with marble is a monumental tomb built for one of the notables of the city. In the south of the Agora, is the Dor Agora flanked to it. Only a few of these magnificent buildings have survived up until this day, the others remain buried under the village houses and gardens.

Macellum

The rectangular area in the south of the antique city is the Macellum, which was used as a food market. The round structured building in the middle of this area is the Stock Exchange Building from 3rd century A.D. where the upper limit prices were set.

Hammam and Plaestra
Between the Stadium and Temple areas, in the front, there is the Hammam complex with its columned courtyard and rich decorations. The rich marble coatings and the water and heating channels of this symmetrical building are still visible. In front of the Hammam, there is the Palaestra, a large square-shaped courtyard for sports activities.

Stadium and Theater

The Stadium Theater Complex of Aizonia is unmatched. Its construction started in the 1st century A.D. and continued intermittently until the 3rd century. Since the sitting groups of the stadium are slightly polygonal, the building widens in the middle. The stadium facade separating the stadium from the theatre and the stage of the theater were adorned with rich marble decorations, which have since been ruined by earthquakes.

Roman Bridges

They are across the Koca Brook, also called Penkalas. In the classical era, there were five bridges connecting the two sides. One of these was a timber-made bridge for pedestrians, whereas the others were arched bridges made of stone.

Street with Columns

This was discovered during the excavations between 1992-1995. Built in 400 A.D., the columns along the street, which had been restored and re-erected were stripped from the early antique buildings. The doors of the shops used to open-up to this street and the Stock Exchange Building was nearby.

The center of an episcopacy in the early Byzantine period, the city faded into the background in later times. During the Middle Ages, a fortress was constructed in the place where the old temple used to stand. During Seljukid sovereignty in the 13th century, it was used as a base by the Cavdar Tartars, hence its name Cavdarhisar.

Aizanoi was rediscovered by European travellers in 1824 and research was done on this settlement in 1830/1840. Excavations by the German Archaeological Institute under the leadership of M. Schede and D. Krencker started in 1926. This work was taken up again by R. Naumann in 1970.
